Generating materials

Describe a surface and get a seamless, tileable PBR material wired up and assigned: color, normal, roughness, metalness, and height.

The interactive version has full-text search, a table of contents, and light/dark themes.

The Assistant can also generate a seamless, tileable PBR material from a description: "weathered bronze," "mossy cobblestone," "brushed gold." It comes back as a full physically-based material (base color, normal, roughness, metalness, and height maps) and gets wired up and assigned to your selection. Cost is about $0.08 per material.

Materials generate faster than models: roughly 15–30 seconds. The result is saved to your material library and its maps are re-hosted on your account, so the material stays put.

Tell it how often to repeat, and whether it moves

A generated material used to wrap exactly once across whatever it was put on. That's right for a prop and useless for ground: a water surface stretched once over a 400-metre plane is one smeared ripple. So a material bound by the Assistant or by Claude over MCP can carry two extra things:

  • Repeat: how many times the surface tiles, as one number or one per axis. Ask for "tile it forty times across the ground" and you get forty tiles rather than one enormous stone.
  • Motion: a scroll or a flipbook, the same animation the material graph offers by hand. A scrolling normal map on a flat plane is the flowing-water recipe: the surface ripples and the scene's real lighting reacts to it.

Both apply to the whole PBR set at once, so you can never end up with the colour tiled forty times beside the bumps tiled once, which is a bug that takes an hour to spot. Both are part of the material's identity too: asking for the same surface at a different tiling gives you a new material rather than silently reusing the one from a minute ago. Out-of-range numbers are refused by name instead of quietly pinned to the ceiling.

Select first, then ask Select the object you want surfaced, then ask the Assistant to "generate a cracked-clay material and put it on this." It'll bind the new material to your selection automatically.
